On the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea and in preparation for Pentecost Sunday, the Lutheran World Federation and the Orthodox Church are issuing a Common Statement on the Holy Spirit, the Church, and the World.

EDITORIAL

Dear Friends, As interest in Orthodoxy continues to grow worldwide, in response to spiritual, religious, and social factors, we have decided to create a section of English-language Orthodox Witness in the online magazine ΣΤΟΝ ΙΣΚΙΟ ΤΟΥ ΗΣΚΙΟΥ (In the Shadοw of Shade). During the Sacrament of Ordination to the priesthood, after the Holy Gifts have been blessed, the bishop hands the Holy Body to the newly ordained priest, calling on him to guard ‘this deposit’ ‘until the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ’. The Orthodox Church is the guardian of this ‘deposit’, a fact which now has worldwide recognition. As Greeks and Orthodox Christians, we feel the need to share parts of this ‘deposit’ with people of goodwill everywhere. We are therefore instituting this section of In the Shadow in the English language, the leading international language of our times, with the blessings of the Holy Cappadocian Fathers, who in their own times used Greek for similar reasons, and, of course, with your prayers and support. On this page of Orthodox Witness will be published in English texts of UP TO 1000 words. The content and correct English rendering of the texts are the exclusive responsibility of their authors.
